Southwood was founded in 1973 specializing in 18th century upholstery that was unique to the industry. It was made standard with the highest quality and comfort. That philosophy continues today, with the product line expanding to include styles from every period, as well as skirted and exposed wood pieces that will be popular through the 21st century. Southwood has one of the most complete collection of upholstered furniture in the industry.
Southwood has developed a reputation as the best reproduction company in America, which led to licensee agreements with Historic New England and Historic Deerfield. These 17th, 18th and 19th century pieces are replicated with one important caveat, they are made with 21st century comfort. The association has provided critical expertise in identifying and correctly reproducing the finest pieces from the “golden age of furniture.”
The value of Southwood is evident in many ways, but the true value lies beneath the surface in the details each craftsmen utilizes to produce superior furniture. Each piece is constructed with the highest quality possible to ensure strength and durability. Frames are assembled carefully with kiln-dried hardwood, which is secured with double doweled joints and reinforced. We find it critical to finish exposed wood upholstery carefully achieving a beautiful luster. Each sofa and chair is eight-way hand tied and has spring down cushions. Standard cushions are specially chosen for the proper comfort and style of the piece. The true test of the comfort in our fine quality upholstery is the ability to sit “in” our furniture, not “on” it.
While Southwood will always favor a classic style that will endure for generations, the new vision consists of more transitional designs. We have a selection of various styles and a quality that will surpass your expectations. The talented men and women of Southwood have a love and desire to make outstanding furniture, which truly means…
Excellence still exists!
