Louis XV, Circa 1715-1774
When Louis began his reign, he encouraged new designs. Furniture of this period was developed with carving and graceful lines and embraced the cyma curve concept creating a sense of motion to a stationary object. Furniture became more ornate and luxurious, more feminine and smaller in scale. Comfort was also stressed.

Louis XVI, Circa 1774-1792
The unearthing of the ruins at Pompeii brought about renewed interest in antiquity. Curves yield to straight lines, scrolled surfaces to rectangular ones and furniture legs found expression as fluted vertical members. The frills of Louis XV gave way to resurgence of the classical age and its pure, relatively unadorned sprit of design.

French Empire, circa 1800-1830
This style expresses the imperial ambitions of Napoleon and was created at his command. Of classical Greek and Roman inspirations, it is ponderous and ostentatious, but with classic dignity. The documented antique reproductions below are approved by the museum Historic New England.

Rococo Period, Circa 1750-1770
The exaggerated styling of Rococo furniture was developed in France from Chinese forms and came to England during the Chippendale Period. The examples below demonstrate the exuberance of the Continental Rococo style and are attributed to Venetian craftsmen.
